Clamps

Acland clamps are appreciated worldwide for microvascular surgery. they are light, simple, compact and easy to apply with wide gripping surfaces, which spread the closing pressure uniformly across small, delicate vessels, avoiding harmful crushing and slipping of the vessels. A safety-stop avoids overstressing of the clamp spring.

Each clamp size is available in 3 different types:
-single clamp
-double clamp with approximator
-double clamp with approximator and frame
We recommend the approximator with frame for almost all end-to-end anastomosis, particularly when operating without assistance.
The approximator without frame is used when the presence of an assistant makes a frame unnecessary, or when the available apace does not allow the use of a frame.

"A" and "V" Pattern Clamps

Clamps are available in "A" and "V" pattern. The difference between the two patterns is the inward curvature of the jaws near the very tip of the "A" clamp. This modification eliminates the sliding out of thick-walled arteries. "V" clamps have perfectly flat jaws.

Clamps for Clinical Work

We recommend "A" clamps for arteries and "V" clamps for veins in lower extremities.

Clamps for Animal Work

Rats and rabbits have very thin-walled arteries, so "A" clamps should not be used. In this case "V" clamps are suitable for both arteries and veins.
Dogs have thicker-walled arteries, so that "A" and "V" clamps are recommended.

Clamp sizes

Each clamp size works best over a particular range of vessel sizes, as indicated below. "Vessel size" refers to the external diameter of the dilated vessel.

Clamp Size Length Vessel Size
C-1 8mm 0.3-0.8mm
C-2 11mm 0.7-1.5mm
C-3 14mm 1.0-2.2mm
C-4 17mm 2.0-3.5mm
C-5 25mm 3.5-5.0mm

These data also apply to the corresponding double clamps.

Care of Clamps

During the operation do not allow blood to dry on the clamps. Immediately after use, the clamps should be immersed in cleaning solution for 30 minutes. Hold the immersed clamp open for a while to wet the inner surfaces. Move approximator clamps laterally a few times. Rinse well with a fine jet of distilled water to remove all blood residues. Dry the clamps immediately.
